When the body is alive, the amount of radioactive carbon-14 to the amount of normal carbon-12 is a fixed ratio. After death, the body no longer exchanges carbon with the atmosphere through metabolism. Thus, stable carbon-12 remains in the body as it breaks down, but radioactive carbon-14 gradually breaks down, causing the ratio of carbon-14 to carbon-12 to decrease. Scientists can determine the age of the remains by measuring this ratio of carbon-14 to carbon-12.
